Robyn Baker developed anorexia when she was 17 years old and was hospitalized at the age of 18. At 27, Robyn entered in patient treatment for a second time and began a difficult but authentic path of honest recovery. The hardest part for her had been finding a way to maintain a healthy and recovery-centered relationship with exercise. After many slip-ups and minor relapses, Robyn created a wellness method that utilizes mindfulness techniques, meditation and intense self-inquiry practices called Intuitive Exercise. From this she was inspired to open Asteya Fitness, a body positive and recovery-centered studio as a way to honor her past while teaching others her healing method of Intuitive Exercise. Robyn wanted to create a space to move and exercise where body-shaming would not be tolerated and the joy of moving in unique bodies would be celebrated.
Now, in connection with her past struggles with body image and anorexia, Robyn gives back in her community by hosting monthly Yoga and Body Image Workshops at her studio, Asteya Fitness in Costa Mesa, CA. All classes are donation based and 100% of the proceeds go to the Yoga and Body Image Coalition. In these workshops she discusses a section from the book, Yoga and Body Image, as well as incorporating a gentle asana practice. Robyn also hosts Embody Love Workshops which are transformational workshops where girls and women address issues on body-shaming, body image and self worth.
"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children...to leave the world a better place...to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Today, Robyn works and plays in Orange County, California with her children, husband and two crazy cats. She is a community member of the Yoga and Body Image Coalition, a contributor to the mental health website, The Libero Network and an activist working to stop "fitspiration". She remains committed to her recovery and hopes to bring the method of Intuitive Exercise to all who struggle with exercise addiction and body image to find a healthy relationship with exercise in their eating disorder recovery.
